  • Set the depth stop of the grinding head and it must fit into the teeth. Don’t take too much of the metal because can overheat the metal and loose its temper. Try that the grinding wheel only touches the inside edge of the tooth.
  • There’s going to be an amount of sparks when you start touching the first tooth of the wheel with the grinder, look inside the tooth by lifting the wheel. You must see a curve in the tooth with a shiny metal look. Then sharp the next teeth.
  • Reset the blade tooth angle (just like Step 5) so you can adjust the grinder for the next set of teeth in the chainsaw blade. If the first time that you set the angle has a positive 10 degrees you’ll have to set it in a negative 10 degrees for the opposite set of teeth.
  • So, work continuously until all the teeth have the full curve and the shiny metal look.

How to sharpen your Chainsaw

A cutter is made up of two essential parts: the first is a flat-faced depth gauge that works for the depth’s control and a second one a dual-profile cutting element.   • Determine the size of the saw’s chain; you’ll need a rotary grindstone or a chainsaw file that matches the chain tooth. There are three different sizes of chainsaw teeth’s (3/16 – 5/32 and 7/32 of an inch), the diameter of your saw must be exactly as the grindstone or file. 
  • Use mineral spirits or degreasing detergent so you can clean the chain completely, remove all the oil, debris and dirt from the chain. It’s not recommended to do an excessive cleaner in the engine and other parts because can damage the chainsaw.
  • The teeth can get chipped, broken or bent so inspect them so you can determine the damage. The top plate should be at least ¼ inch in length, any shorter than this it can make that the cutting tooth breaks.
  • Put your saw in a solid surface, it’s important that the saw be steady, the blade must be stable for a safety filing. So, clamp the bar in a vise, with the jaws holding the bar the chain can rotate easily.
  • Place the leading cutter at the start point. This is going to be the shortest cutter on the chain, if the cutter have the same length start filing anywhere, and focus that each cutter that the flat edge on top of each cutter are virtually the same length. 
  • Set the angled “tooth” in your file in the notch on the front, the curve of the file must correctly fit the curve of the face of the cutting tip, and don’t forget, the top of the file diameter needs to be above the top of the tooth.
  • Hold the file at the same angle that the cutter was placed in the beginning, this angle should be 25 – 30 degrees, look for the saw specifications, there are chains that have a flatter angle. Be aware that you must match the angle of the chain that was originally machined to.  
  • Slide the file trough the face of the cutter, twist it, but not too much, with this you can discharge metal chips that are removed. You can push the file from the short side of the angle into the long point. Think in letting a smooth cutting surface.  
  • It’s important that you work every second tooth just like the start point around the loop. While you progress through the chain keep working by hand so the teeth you’re filing is on top of the bar.
  • Reverse the side of the chainsaw and keep the work around the unfiled teeth angled in the opposite direction. And keep an eye on the length of each flat top of the cutter, you can use the caliper so the “bite” be equal. 
  • Remember to check the depth gauge; this need to be cleared and the curved hook shaped link must be between the cutters. If the depth gauge is too high you need to file it.
  • File all raker that sits too high, for this you can use a flat mill bastard file.
  • And last, oil that chain, check the tension and the chainsaw will be ready to work already.
